Aris George Stevens

Aris George Stevens, age 31, died Friday, October 7, 2005 in a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m.,

Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at the Chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home with Father Ted Bita and Rev. Jack Lovelace officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview

Mr. Stevens is survived by his daughter, Aris Celene Stevens of Nashville, his mother, Maria K. Stevens, brothers, Nick (Heather) Stevens, and Chris (Tracy) Stevens all of Selma, several nieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins, fiance, Angela Washburn of Selma, and special aunt, Stella Woolson of Selma.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Nick Stevens.

Sherman Jackson Sr.

Mr. Sherman Jackson Sr., 71, of Georgia, formerly of Selma, passed October 8, 2005 at Beverly Healthcare in Atlanta, GA.

Graveside service will be held October 12, 2005 at 11:00A.M. Officiated by Rev. Johnny Blount, With Miller Funeral Service Directing, Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Sherman (Ormatine) Jackson Jr., one daughter, Sharon Jackson, one grandchild, a host of nieces and nephews and a special relative, Ella Mae McCondichie.

John E. Martin

John E. Martin, 81, died Saturday, October 8, 2005. The service will be at 3 p.m. EDT Tuesday at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home.

Mr. Martin was a native of Selma, Ala., and a longtime resident of Metairie, La. He was a former World War II Navy veteran who served in the South Pacific and on the USS Borie. John attended the University of Alabama and became a co-owner of Metro Contract Hardware in New Orleans. He was an architectural hardware consultant for 50 years. He was a member of the National Hardware Association and was a Protestant.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Gloria Gallagher Martin of Metairie, La; a dear sister, Mildred Crisman of Selma, Ala; two loving children, Mrs. Sherry Riley (and husband Danny) and Mrs. Debra Placilla (and husband Bill), both of Tallahassee; seven devoted grandchildren, Marlo Ransdell (and husband Joey) of Gainesville, Lisa Munroe (and husband Hugh) and Michael Schultz both of Tallahassee, Clint Edwards of Selma, Ala., Ben and Justin Placilla, both of Tallahassee and Sarah Harris (and husband Chris) of Washington D.C.; a great grandchild, Brooke; two sisters-in-law, Angela Persons (and husband Lewis) of Tallahassee and Peggye Gallagher; and many other nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth “Betsy”

Yow Pearce

Elizabeth “Betsy” Yow Pearce died on October 9, 2005 at Bethany House Hospice in Auburn, Alabama.

Betsy was born March 29, 1924 to Winnie Vail and David T. Yow in High Point, North Carolina. Betsy’s great grandfather: Seborn Perry was one of the early founders of High Point. Betsy’s mother started the first Girl Scout Troop in North

Carolina and Betsy was active in Girl Scouts throughout her life. Her father was a part owner of the Hi Toms, a minor league baseball team.

Betsy graduated from Ashley Hall in Charleston. S.C. in 1941. She received a B.S. in home economics from The College of William and Mary in 1944 where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority.

Betsy met her future husband Robert McIntyre Pearce in the summer of 1943 when he was a West Point cadet visiting Williamsburg Virginia. They were married on June 14, 1944.

Most of Betsy’s life was spent supporting her husband’s Army career, other military wives, the Girl Scouts, Chi Omega and the Episcopal Church. Betsy was also an avid golfer, played in numerous golf tournaments and was active in a number of ladies eighteen hole golf associations in Florida and Alabama.

Betsy will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on December 8, 2005 with her husband Colonel (ret,) Robert McIntyre Pearce, who died at Bethany House Hospice on September 27, 2005. Prior to his retirement from the U.S. Army in 1974 Colonel Pearce was the acting Deputy Commanding General of the United States Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. There will be a service for the Pearces at the chapel at Arlington Nationa1 Cemetery at 9 a.m. prior to military honors and burial.

After Betsy was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2000 they moved to Azalea Place. Her Parkinsons was treated by Dr. Alan Freeman of the Emory Clinic.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by their son Robert McIntyre Pearce, Jr. who died in March of 1999 in San Diego, CA from cancer related to exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam.

Betsy is survived by her daughter Perry Elizabeth Pearce Benton and her husband Douglas Arthur Benton of Ono Island, Alabama; her grandson Major David Alan Reeder and wife Lynn of Atlanta, Georgia; son David Yow Pearce and wife Fran of Browns, Alabama; her grandson David Yow Pearce, Jr. , wife Lynn; and great grandchildren Jackson and Mary Ashlyn of Browns, Alabama ~ her grandson William Weissinger Pearce, wife Beth and great granddaughter Anne Frances Pearce of Selma, Alabama.

Other survivors include Betsy’s grand daughter Jessica Davidson and great grand daughter Emma Dillard of Birmingham and grandson Robbie McIntyre Logan of Katy, Texas.

A funeral service will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Auburn, Alabama on October 11, 2005 at 3 p.m, with visitation following the service.

Nan Clare Grantham Young

Nan Clare Grantham Young, age 85, died Sunday, October 9, 2005 in a Birmingham hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at New Live Oak Cemetery with Rev. Lee Tate officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Ms. Young is survived by her sons, Dan Eugene (Linda-Kay) Young of Birmingham and James Houston (Christine) Young of Foley, sister, Mary Elizabeth (Glenn) Estess of Mountain Brook, grandchildren, John-Andrew Young of Vestavia Hills, Kristin Dawn Young (Mike) Cage of Crestview, FL, Jennifer Hope Young (Shane) Sweatt of Kennesaw, GA, and Marianna Joy Young of Foley, great-grandchildren, Callie Grace Sweatt and Michael Tate Sweatt of Kennesaw, GA and James Grayson Cage of Crestview, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was retired from Uniontown Public Schools in Perry County as a school teacher. Family visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Honorary pallbearers are Robert Bamberg, III, Glenn Estess, Jr., Walton Drake, Ken Moseley, Rickey Moseley, Jimmy Woodfin, Sonny Woodfin, John-Andrew Young, and Buck George.
