For Concordia College and coach Shepherd Skanes, an open week is just what the team needs. Sitting down and looking over his schedule, being 2-3 as a first-year NAIA program is an accomplishment.

Of Concordia’s trio of losses, only one has been by a large margin &045; last weekend’s 49-7 loss to Webber International College.

The Hornets lost to Millsaps College the week before 24-23 on a blocked extra point and borderline partisan officiating. They lost to West Alabama in game one of their program.

But the Hornets have scored a road victory against Allen University in South Carolina and then a victory at Memorial Stadium against Atlantic College.

Skanes and his coaching staff are using this week and next week to rectify some of the mental mistakes that have plagued the team and also to heal some of the injured players.

Skanes said that some of the problems his team is facing comes from their system.

The Hornets are also going to try to heal from the wear and tear of five games straight.

Ken Johnson, the Hornets quarterback played most of the game with turf toe.

The Hornets also had troubles in the kicking game with their first string punter being out with a hamstring injury, their No. 2 punter broke his ankle and was taken off the field and is set for surgery.

And the list goes on for the Hornets.

The Hornets will work on their gameplan for Texas College in the upcoming weeks.

The Hornets will be back in action on Oct. 13 when they take a road trip to the Lonestar State to face Texas College.
