In high school football, sometimes a team feels like the windshield. Other times they can feel like the bug. Last week, the Selma High Saints were the windshield. Friday night, however, they were the bug as they were defeated at home 31-0 by the top-ranked Prattville Lions.

The home standing Saints were able to stand toe-to-toe with the Lions for a majority of the first quarter, following the ejection of Prattville Middle linebacker Tim Rawlins. But, with 3:07 to go in the opening frame, Lion running back Joshua Goodwin rumbled his way into the Saints end zone for the touchdown from eight-yards out.

Bryant Hall split the uprights with the point after and gave the Lions a lead that would grow throughout the game, 7-0.

Hall contributed to the effort in the second quarter, when he sent a 27-yard field goal sailing through the goalposts with 7:22 left in the half, pushing the lead to 10-0.

Roger Douglas added six to the score with a touchdown of his own on the ground.

Hall pushed the point after through, moving the score to 17-0.

With under three minutes left in the half, the Lions were threatening another score, after being set-up inside the Saint 30-yard line courtesy of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

But, Prattville wasn’t able to push the ball across the goal line.

As the horn sounded to signal the end of the first half, Selma went into the locker room trailing 17-0.

That score remained frozen on the scoreboard until the 5:44 mark. Justin Albert added six points with a five-yard touchdown scamper.

Goodwin found his way into the end zone for the two-point conversion, pushing the lead to 25-0.

Selma’s defense scored an interception late in the third quarter, but a defensive pass interference call handed the ball back over to the charging Lions.

With 18.6 left on the clock in the third frame, Larry Smith connected with Brandenn Pickett from 15-yards out for the touchdown.

The conversion attempt failed and Prattville was forced to settle with a 31-0 lead.

The Saints, however, did not lay down. In the fourth quarter, Selma quarterback Cajun Pritchett found an open Quin Pernell for a 23-yard touchdown pass.

The score was negated when the Saints were flagged for blocking below the waist.

When the final horn sounded, Selma came out on the low side of the scoreboard, falling 31-0.

The Saints will be back in action next Thursday when they travel to Montgomery’s Crampton Bowl for a meeting with the Wolverines of George Washington Carver High School.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
