The Emergency Management Agency announced on Sunday all the Gulf Coast evacuees have been placed in temporary housing and the shelter at Westwood Baptist Church has been closed.

However, the meeting planned for 9:30 a.m. on Monday for evacuees to meet with the Selma Housing Authority will still take place at the church as originally scheduled.

EMA Director Brett Howard said the majority of those using the shelter this past week only came for vouchers and meals and stayed at the homes of friends or relatives.

“We only had about 20 or so

people spend the night at the shelter at any give time,” said Red Cross coordinator Sylvia Smith.

The Selma Housing Authority and the EMA will still be assisting evacuees who need arrangements, Smith said.

The American Red Cross will also be registering only new clients needing assistance at the Red Cross office at 812 Selma Avenue beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday and continue has needed.

Capt. Don New of the Salvation Army said he will also still be coordinating food efforts at the Salvation Army location at 2104 Franklin Street, located behind Selma High School.

“The Salvation Army will also been fulfilling various social services on a case by case basis,” New said.

Both New and Smith said

that no more clothing or food items are needed at this time.
