Southside’s comeback bid falters against Greensboro

Greensboro &045; Two costly turnovers contributed to the Southside-Selma Panthers second loss of the season as they fall to the Greensboro Raiders in a regional match-up, 18-12.

Southside held on to a 6-0 lead with 16 seconds left in the first half and the ball at their own 20, when Panther quarterback Jeffery Anderson threw an interception that was returned 40 yards for a score to tie the game. In the fourth quarter with less than three minutes to go in the game and the Panthers down 12-6, but driving with the ball at their own 35, Anderson completed a 24-yard pass to Kevin Rowe.

The ball was stripped from him just before he fell out of bounds and the Greensboro defensive back scampered untouched 59 yards to give the Raiders a two touchdown advantage with 2:39 left in the game.

Southside put their first points of the season on the board in the first quarter when senior QB Travis Shine hit senior WR Anthony Harrison for a 27-yard to cap a 53-yard drive that took five plays.

The Panther offense sputtered in the second quarter, but was given life when Willie Cooper intercepted a Raider pass to give SSHS the ball at their own 20-yard line with 16 seconds showing on the clock. The next play Bryant Dudley of Greensboro picked off an Anderson pass and returned it for a score to make it 6 – 6 at the half.

However just before the quarter ended the Raiders had started a drive from their own 46-yard line and reached the end zone on the third play into the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Ivory White hit Kiara Paige for a six-yard strike to give Greensboro a 12-6 advantage. The two-point conversion failed.

Southside couldn’t move the ball in its next possession.

That gave the Raiders a chance to run 5+ minutes off the clock. The Panthers got possession of the ball with 3:23 left in the game. Clyde Brown broke three tackles as he fought his way to the end zone after receiving a pass from Anderson for a 64-yard touchdown. The Raiders recovered the Panther on-side kick attempt and was able to run out the clock.

The Panthers gained 270 yards in the air and minus 11 yards rushing.
