Last Thursday night the Concordia College Hornets walked off the field at the University of West Alabama’s Tiger Stadium, it was a bittersweet moment.

The Hornets had just seen the blood, sweat and tears of a year’s plus labor come to fruition in a losing effort.

Saturday afternoon, the Hornets look to add a ‘W’ to their records.

The Concordia College Hornets travel to Columbia, SC for their first conference game of the season against Allen University. The Hornets are in the NAIA, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, in the Southeastern Athletic Conference.

Which is a conference that Hornet coach Shephard Skanes finds very winnable.

The first year college coach of the first year college football team sees this match-up with the Allen University Yellow Jackets as one that his squad has a very good chance of winning.

The Yellow Jackets finished last season with a mark of 4-5.

Skanes and the Hornets come into Saturday’s game with one road trip under their belts, despite it being a respectable loss to an NCAA Division II college.

He also feels that the Hornets passing game could be beneficial against the Yellow Jackets. But he isn’t certain because Saturday is the season opener for Allen U.

While freshmen mistakes could have been blamed for some of the Hornets struggles against West Alabama, Skanes isn’t accepting that as an excuse for this weekend.

Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 6 p.m., and will be played at Allen U’s Charles F. Bolden Stadium.
