As city workers spent the hot afternoon on Thursday at Ronnie Sharpe Memorial Park cutting grass, laying the cement for a basketball court and sprucing up the playground equipment, a few of them took a break for one extra task: installing a bright yellow sign.

The sign, which reads &8220;A Sign of Progress…Building our community one project at a time,&8221; is the first of several signs that will be placed at the site of city-sponsored projects.

Mayor James Perkins Jr. said the can’t-miss yellow signs are a way to let Selma citizens know about the projects being undertaken by the city.

Perkins said the revamping of Ronnie Sharpe Memorial Park, located at the corner of Jeff Davis Avenue and Martin Luther King Street, will make the park more accessible to the residents of Ward 6 and fun, safe place for children to play.

Perkins, Police Chief Jimmy Martin and councilman Johnny Leashore, along with other city officials, all came to watch the work going on the park and the new sign being put up.

There are two signs for every ward and all of them display the name of the ward’s council representative.

The whole purpose of the new signs, Perkins said, is just to bring public awareness to the city’s projects and prove that progress is being in Selma.
