Dayton Dawkins said that Central Christian wanted to do something different this year as a fundraiser for the school’s athletic program. As a result, the idea of having a fishing tournament came about.

This past weekend, the Alabama River played host to the inaugural Warrior Pride Bass Classic.

Langston, who serves as the tournament director for the Valley Grande Baptist fishing tournament held in the spring, said that in the CCA Warrior Pride tournament they were expecting 75 boats, but had the payouts prorated for 60.

The tournament started at first safe light and according to Langston, weigh-ins began at 3 p.m.

Toby and Zac Lightsey from Centreville ended up winning the tournament with a weight of 21.4 lbs. They also won the big fish prize with a catch of 5.5 lbs. In one day on the river, the Father/son duo won $2600. Joe Stockman and Roger Stockman from Selma claimed second place with a weight of 16.2 lbs and won a prize of $1,000.

Mike McMillan and Pat Chambers of Centreville posted third place with a catch of 15.4 lbs. The pair was awarded $600.

The tournament took in $6600 for the school. After all the payouts were awarded, the Warrior athletic department ended up receiving $2500.

The event received such a positive response, that Dawkins and Central Christian plan to have another tournament next summer.

Langston is also planning on having his Valley Grande Baptist Tournament in April of next year.
