The big yellow bus inside the Selma Mall not only serves as a reminder about the start of school in a few weeks, but it’s also the place where parents can pick up free school uniforms.

On Aug. 5, Lorraine Capers, the Truancy Officer for Selma City Schools, will be distributing more than 1,000 donated school uniforms to parents on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m., Capers said tickets will be distributed to all those who attended the uniform give-away.

“We have collected uniforms from every Selma City school,” Capers said.

The uniform give-away is the culmination of an effort several months ago to encourage students to donate their uniforms for extra credit.

This is the third year the Truancy office has sponsored a uniform drive and give-away, and Capers said it has been a popular event.

Though the deadline for school credit has long since past, Capers said she is still accepting donations for next week’s give-away.

Residents can place their old school uniforms in drop boxes next to school bus at the Selma Mall.

Uniforms from any of the city schools will be accepted.

For more information about the uniform give-way, Capers can be reached by contacting the city school system at 874-1600.
