Over the past several months the Selma Police Department has grown by leaps and bounds.

Not only has there been an increase in police officers at the department, Police Chief Jimmy Martin has also initiated some new programs to help the officers better protect the public.

On Tuesday, Martin swore in two new officers to the force, bringing the total number of officers at the department to 61.

One of those swore in by Martin, Brian Nichols, is not so new to the force.

Nichols had previously worked for the SPD and decided to return after a yearlong absence.

The second officer sworn in, on the other hand, is just beginning his law enforcement career.

Willie Calhoun Jr. will be working with a training officer until he can attend the Police Academy, according to Martin.

Before hiring a new officer, Martin said candidates must undergo rigorous testing.

Martin said he is planning to phase in a fitness program for all of his officers.

Along with the fitness program, Martin said he is also creating an elite Special Response Team.

Martin said when the SRT is in place next year, it will be the first of its kind in Selma.

The SPD’s top officers have already begun SWAT training, which consist of defense tactics and sniper training.

Martin said he is excited about getting in SRT in place.

&8220;This special elite team could be used for special assignments, hostage situations, barricade situations, and visits from dignitaries,&8221; he said.

Martin said the increase in officers and special programs are just a few of the many plans he has in the works to provide protection for Selma citizens.
