at abortion protest

Around 60 people gathered near the front of City Hall yesterday evening for a silent protest against abortion.

The group stood facing the grassy area between City Hall and the Selma-Dallas County Public Library, with the large American flag waving in the breeze above Pinebelt Wireless serving as their backdrop.

Red tape with the word &8220;Life&8221; printed on it covered the mouth of each protester.

Crystal Camacho, spokesperson for the group, said the tape symbolized the unheard cries of aborted babies.

Camacho is part of the Washington, D.C.-based Pro-Life group The Cause.

She is one of five The Cause members traveling the country organizing protests in various cities.

Camacho said the group chose to organize a protest in Selma because of the city’s significance to the Civil Rights Movement.

Since October 2004, Camacho said The Cause members have also been protesting abortion in front

of the Supreme Court building.

During the nearly two-hour silent protest in Selma, many local residents read their Bibles or lifted their hands in prayer. Others stood silently facing the American flag.
