Coaches will tell anyone that what happens in the weight room during the summer is the most important part of the season.

different philosophies on working out and summer conditioning.

That can be seen in Selma’s two biggest schools. Last week, coach Woodrow Lowe, Jr., had his Saints practicing 7-on-7 skeleton-offense drills against a split squad and then against Wilcox Central’s team.

At Morgan Academy, coach Robert Gartman had his Senators splitting time in the weightroom before taking to the field and working on conditioning.

Gartman has his weight room open to any athlete at Morgan, but says his football players are required to come.

Morgan’s weight room is opened three days a week with workout times of 10 a.m.,- 12 p.m., and 4-7 p.m. The days of operation are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Football practice at Morgan is set to start on July 29, one of the first times that Gartman has ever had to play football in July.

But that doesn’t mean he’s not thinking about it year round.

Selma also experienced a large opening day crowd when 52 Saints showed up for the first workout.

Selma’s program hits the weight room bright and early at 7 a.m. The team will be grouped up in offense and defense and then work different muscles before swapping sides of the room.

Lowe also incorporates his surroundings into their workouts.

The Saints will start practicing August 1 and will put the pads on three days later.
