Sally Lou Russell

Sally Lou Russell, 92, of Centreville, AL, passed away Thursday, June 9. Funeral service will be Monday, June 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Russell, Rev. Reuben Compere, and Rev. George K. Jones, Sr. officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing.

Interment will be in Live Oak Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 12, 2005, 6 to 8 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home.

She is survived by one son, John “Danny” (Denise) Russell of Brent, AL; one daughter, Judy (Charles) Croft of Dellwood, FL; three sisters, Martha Goenendyke of Lynn Haven, FL, Clara Rogers of Hoover, AL and Frances Caro of Pensacola, FL; five grandchildren, Laurie Hamilton, Carol Childers, Paula Cornwell, Lydia Fikes, and Rev. John Russell; ten great grandchildren, Alana Neel, Jordan Neel, Danielle Childers, Claye Childers, Natalie Cornwell, Olivia Cornwell, Isaac Russell, Rachel Russell, Grace Ann Fikes, and Tom Fikes.

Her husband, Julian Russell, preceded her in death

Pallbearers will be John Hamilton, Brian Cornwell, Philip Fikes, David Childers, Ernie Russell, Ray Russell, James Rogers and Charles Piper.

Leola Cobb

Leola Cobb, 87, of Dallas County, died Wednesday, June 8 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Services are scheduled for Sunday, June 12 at 2 p.m. in Plantersville with Rev. Rawlings officiating. Burial will follow in Grove Hill Church Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include one son, JD Cobb; five daughters, Ada B. Fleming, Mable Fleming, Estelle Lanier, Guamita Powell, and Juanita Todd; one brother, Rufus Curry, Jr.; one sister, Juanita Caver; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; four sons-in-law; one daughter-in-law; and a host of nephews, nieces, and other relatives.

Active pallbearers include Ollie Todd, Jr., Fernando Fleming, Michael Powell, Christopher Powell, Leander Cobb, Steven Cobb and Muhammad Powell. She was a Methodist.

Charlie Phillips

Charlie Phillips died Tuesday, June 7 at his home in Birmingham.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, June 15 at 11 a.m. at Smith and Gaston Funeral Home in Birmingham.

Cleophus Kelly Hobbs

Cleophus Kelly Hobbs, son of Amanda Hobbs Jones and Rev. Willie Hobbs, Sr., was born March 9, 1946 in Dallas County. He confessed Christ at an early age and joined the New Shiloh Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Griffin. He departed this life on Saturday, June 4.

He was united in holy matrimony to Sylvia Robertson in 1972. Their union was blessed with a son, C’Kiiumba.

Cleophus graduated from R.B. Hudson High School in 1964 and attended Rutgers University. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1967.

He was active in the Civil Rights Movement (Foot Solider) over the years, especially in Selma Movement of the 1960’s. On numerous occasions he went to jail for the cause of freedom and the right to vote. He marched in the Bridge Crossing on Bloody Sunday and a participant in the Selma to Montgomery March. He was active in community efforts, starting a volunteer fire department in Sunshine Village.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted mother, Amanda Hobbs Jones; father, Rev. Willie (Ocie) Hobbs, Sr.; son, C’Kiiumba (Angela) Hobbs; grandsons, Marley and Woods Hobbs, Tuscaloosa; two brothers, Nolen (Brenda) Hobbs of Stone Mountain, GA and Willie (Elois) Hobbs, Jr.; two sisters, Frances (Edward) Coles and Janice (Laurence) Towns both of Selma; four nephews, Dr. Hasan Hobbs, James B. Hobbs, John Towns and Togo Coles; four nieces, Aisha (Charles) Nicholas, Matese Towns, Stephanie Coles and Traci Hobbs; four uncles, James Kelly, Rev. Jeremiah (Jerline) Kelly, Frank Kelly III and James Tate; seven aunts, Mary Sewell, Minister Annie Cunningham, Violet Kennon, Darnella (Jessie) Furr, Frances (William) Howard, Rose Mary Patton and Jane Tate; one step-brother, Fredrick Jones; three step-sisters, Beatrice, Jean, and Veronica Jones; a best friend, Charles Bonner; a special friend, Annie Watts and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 13 at 1 p.m. at Morning Star Baptist Church with Minister Annie K. Cunningham officiating. Interment will take place at Fairlawn Memory Gradens. Repast will be at County Road 467, Sunshine Village Center, Sardis.

Pallbearers will be family, friends and classmates.

The family acknowledges with grateful appreciation, the many acts of love, kindness, prayers and words of encouragement extended to them by many friends during this time of bereavement.

Willie Lawson-Perkins

Willie Lawson-Perkins, 58, of Demopolis, passed away Friday, June 3 at her residence.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 11 at 12 noon at the Jerusalem Baptist Church in Gallion.

Rev. Sid Rowser was the Eulogist. Interment followed in the Community Center in Gallion, AL.

The remains laid in repose at the church on Saturday, June 11 beginning at 11 a.m.

Kenneth Edwin Gardner

Kenneth Edwin Gardner, age 57, died Friday June 10, 2005 in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday June 13, in New Live Oak Cemetery officiated by Rev. Tommy Fancher and directed by Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home.

Mr. Gardner is survived by his wife, Linda J Gardner of Selma, children, Jimmy (Sheba) Gardner of Selma, Kellie (Richard) Robinson of Selma, Brandi Gardner of Selma, mother, Lillian Gardner of Selma, grandchildren, Sierra Gardner, Trenton Gardner, and Alex Robinson, brother, Benny Gardner of Tennessee, sister, Marianne Rudolph of Panama City, FL, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John Mixson Gardner. Honorary pallbearers will be Sydney DeRamus, Matt Smitherman, Paul Smitherman, Stephen Smitherman, Gene Hethcox, Al Dubose, Terry Burton, Jay Harrison, and Roger Campbell. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.

Lillie Moxley

Lillie Mae McCall Moxley, 98, of Selma, AL died Friday, June 10, 2005 in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m., Monday June 13, 2005 at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Laurel, Mississippi with Rev. Vaughn McQueen officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Moxley is survived by a sister Mary Leigh Howorth, three nieces, Lynn Gaston, Linda McCann, Joanne Phillips, two nephews, Buddy Howorth, Bobby McCall, and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
