Morgan Academy added more honors to its scrapbook following this past weekend’s AISA state tennis tournament.

The Senators finished as the tournament’s runners up behind Lee-Scott Academy and one Lady Senator brought home the individual state championship.

The boys team, consisting of Drew Pomeroy, Rhett Rhyne, Houston Searcy, Cain Sommerville, Kyle Brignac, John Wells and Ellis Talton fell to the Opelika-based independent school by one point, 12-11 in the overall standings.

Lee-Scott’s victory was no surprise to the Senators’ coaches, Baxter Stinson and Frances Henderson.

In the individual matches, the Senators and the Lee-Scott Warriors in No. 1, 2 and 5 singles.

The Warriors Drew Tatum defeated Pomeroy in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 to win the state title at the position.

Gary Fuller struggled, but secured a win over Rhyne 6-3, 6-1, giving the Senator his first loss of the season, and Hayden Gunter scored the final victory of the day for the Warriors at the No. 5 singles slot, but not without a tie-break. Morgan’s Brignac won the first set 7-5, but dropped the next two 6-4, 6-2.

Fort Dale’s Conyers Poole notched the state title in the No. 4 singles position by defeating MA’s Sommerville 6-0, 6-0.

The Senators had a chance to extract some revenge in the No. 1 doubles final, but the Warriors Tatum and Fuller notched a 6-3, 6-2 win over Pomeroy and Rhyne. The loss in the finals was the first doubles loss for the Morgan duo, they finished up 8-1.

Along with the Senators, Morgan Academy’s Lady Senators – comprised of Elaine Song, Bebe Bostick, Katie Taylor, Caroline Woodruff, Amy McGuckin, Alex Parker and Elizabeth Elliot were also competing for state gold.

Taylor found it. The senior member of the Lady Senators tennis squad was seeded as No. 1 coming into the No. 3 singles competition and disposed of Crenshaw Christian’s No. 3 to open the tournament.

She then sent Whitney Jacks from Fort Dale back to Greenville with a semi-final win, advancing to her to the finals against Hannah Notoro from Tuscaloosa Academy.

Taylor and Notoro had to go to tie-breaks on each set, but the Lady Senator was able to pull it out, 7-5 and 7-6.

Along with Taylor, the sophomore McGuckin advanced to the tournament’s final as well, but fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 to Renee Scott of Fort Dale.

The Lady Senators doubles’ team were eliminated from play in the second round of competition.
