Winning has become the standard for sports at Meadowview Christian School. This year the Trojans and Lady Trojans have made appearances in each of the state playoffs. Thursday afternoon, the Trojans baseball team added to that statistic with a 7-2 over Evangel Christian.

Marking Meadowview’s first area championship in nearly 10 years.

Thursday’s game was a simple soap opera &045; win and keep playing or lose and stay at home. The Trojans chose the first and answered Evangel’s 2-0 first inning rally with a pair of runs.

Tyler Wendell led off at the plate and was hit by the pitch. The catcher stole second and then third on a passed ball. He scored the first Meadowview run during pitcher Chris Sewell’s at bat. The pitch slipped out of the catcher’s mitt and rolled to the backstop. Wendell strolled in to cut the lead to 2-1.

Sewell reached base on a walk and worked his way around the basepaths, eventually scoring to tie the game at 2-2. MCS never looked back from there.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Trojans added a pair of runs from Landon MeHan and Austin Davis, pushing them up 4-2.

The Trojan offense posted a fifth run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Blake Smith scored on an overthrow. Sewell added his second run of the afternoon, to put the Trojans further up 6-2.

MCS added it’s final run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Dustin Lee hit into a fielder’s choice at third base. The infielder chose to throw Lee out at first and in doing so allowed Smith to score from third.

Meadowview’s win secured them a spot in the AISA’s Regional Tournament and will play Escambia Academy tentatively on Wednesday next week. The format is best two games out of three, so Wednesday’s game will be a doubleheader and if the Trojans and the Cougars split, game three will be on Thursday.

The AISA final four state championships will be held at Selma’s historic Bloch Park beginning May 10 and running through the 14th.
