Ira Wagoner, Lee Peak, Kelly Jones and Paul Gardner were the best of the bunch during Wednesday’s inaugural Boy of the Year Golf Tournament held at Ocmulgee Golf Course.

The foursome won the first flight with an 18-hole total of 57 on the day.

“The weather cooperated finally,” said Bob Frazer, who is on the selection committee for the Boy of the Year. “It was a great turnout and the people did a good job of supporting it.”

Mixon Russ, Caleb Morris, Mike Bruner and Johnny Smith finished first in the second flight with a group best 61 over the 18-hole course.

“This is our first year having a fundraiser like this,” said Allyson Dansby, Recreation and Teen Director for the YMCA in Selma.

The tournament was set up as a benefit to help raise money to offset costs for Selma’s Boy of the Year Award presented by the YMCA.

“The award is given to one male high school senior. We look at everything, academics, athletics, their Christian leadership,” said Dansby.

The award is a variation on the Jimmy Hitchcock Award that is presented

by the Montgomery YMCA.

The winner of the Boy of the Year award will receive a $1,000 scholarship which will be presented at the awards banquet set for May 12 at 6:30 p.m., at Elkdale Baptist Church.

“Our speakers are Ben Obumanu and Brett Holloman, who were both former Boys of the Year and are on the Auburn University football team,” said Dansby.
