A man who pled guilty Wednesday to robbing a Wilcox County store could face even more time behind bars after he was caught allegedly trying to sneak drugs into his jail cell, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Ronald Winters was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Wilcox County after pleading guilty to third-degree robbery and third-degree escape for the Nov. 13, 2000 robbery of Lamison Grocery in Lamison.

“He was taken into custody today,” said Wilcox County Assistant District Attorney Jimmy Thomas. “After he was brought to the jail and searched, the jailers found a bag of crack cocaine hidden in his sock.”

Thomas said Winters has been out on bond prior to his conviction, giving him plenty of opportunity to obtain the drugs.

“He wasn’t searched before he was sent to jail, so nobody noticed it in court,” Thomas said.

Winters will now be charged with promoting prison contraband third-degree.

“This is a Class C Felony, so he’ll be looking at 10 years to life with his two prior convictions,” Thomas said.

The assistant district attorney said he “couldn’t believe” Winters tried to sneak drugs into prison.

“He just made his situation worse,” Thomas said.
