Marion Averette will celebrate his 100th birthday on Saturday, April 23.

“His birthday is on the 24th, but we are having his party on the 23rd because Sunday is Homecoming at the church,” said his sister, Pearly “Granny” Dunkin. “We are the only two living. I love him to death, and I know he loves me, cause he says he does.”

According to Dunkin, she just wants everyone to know what a good life her brother has led.

“He says, ‘I tell ya’ll the truth. If you don’t live right, you’re going to that place – that bad, bad place, and you’ll never get away from it,'” said Dunkin.

Averette currently lives in Alabaster with his son and daughter-in-law.

“Bless his heart, he don’t suffer, he eats real good, and his daughter-in-law tends to him like a baby,” said Dunkin.

According to her, he loves receiving cards, and will ask his daughter-in-law to read them to him several times.

“He’s hoping to get 100 cards for his birthday, so anyone who wants to, can send him one,” said Dunkin. “I guess if he does get 100 cards, she will be reading forever.”
