B.A.S.S fishermen in Selma this week are out of luck, unless they brought an ark.

The B.A.S.S. tournament set for this weekend has been postponed due to the rising Alabama River growing too swift.

“The river was just too high.

The decision was based entirely upon safety,” Lee Youngblood, a coordinator of the event for Kiwanis Club said. “The river was so high we couldn’t even get to the marina to put the boats in.”

With more rain expected today the waters may crest past flood levels, which would have meant a raging rivers for the boaters to try and

fish.

“We don’t want anyone to get hurt,” Youngblood said.

The tournament is now scheduled for August 14th.

“This is the new series that B.A.S.S. started with ESPN Outdoors,” Youngblood said. “It’s an entry level tournament designed to allow average fisherman to get started in the tournament.

This is a stepping stone to get to bigger tournaments.”

Even though the stepping stone is under water this week, Youngblood said it still has excellent potential for the area.

“Selma has everything to host an ideal tournament,” Youngblood said. “We were really excited to have them here, We have an excellent place, the Alabama River is known far and wide for its bass fishing.

It would have been nice if we would have had a nice spring week, but that’s fishing as they say.”
