This weekend nearly every church in Selma will be celebrating one of the most defining moments in the Christian religion. Various worship services and activities today (Good Friday) and Holy Saturday will be leading up to Easter Sunday, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

The Rev. Rodney Morton of Tabernacle Baptist Church said his congregation will begin celebrating Easter services today at noon with a Good Friday prayer and communion service. Four area pastors have been invited to lead the Prayer of Advent, Prayer of Penance, Prayer of Intercession and Prayer of Thanksgiving, according to Morton.

Morton said the church will also have a 6:45 p.m. service tonight and an egg hunt for children at noon on Saturday at the Progressive Cultural Clubhouse on Union Street.

Easter Sunday services will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

“The public is invited to all of our services,” Morton said. “We would love to see people there.”

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will also have a Good Friday service at noon, according to the Rev. Polk Van Zandt.

On Holy Saturday the church will have a worship service at 10 a.m., followed by a Service of Light at 6:30 p.m.

The Easter Sunday worship service will begin at 10 a.m., Van Zandt said.

“The Rt. Rev. Henry N. Parsley Jr., the bishop of Alabama, will be baptizing and confirming at our Easter service,” Van Zandt said.

The Rev. Dr. Ron Stone of First Presbyterian Church said members of his congregation joined with First Baptist Church for a Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) musical service. The church’s Sunday worship service will be held at 11 a.m.

“My wife will be giving a testimony on the impact the resurrection has had on her,” Stone said.

First Baptist Church will begin their Sunday service at 10:45 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Valley Grande Baptist and Elkdale Baptist will both have Easter egg hunts for children on Saturday.

Wanda Chapman of Valley Grande Baptist said the Easter Sunday services will begin at 8:30 a.m., with Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. and a second worship service at 10:45 a.m.

Elkdale will have a candlelight and Last Supper service on Good Friday at 6:30 p.m., followed by Sunday worship services beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The Church Street United Methodist Church will have their Sunday service at 11 a.m.

Patty Driggers of Northside Baptist Church said the church will host a Saturday afternoon cook-out and Easter egg hunt, with Sunday worship services beginning at 11 a.m.

Queen of Peace Catholic Church will hold their Good Friday worship service at 7 p.m. and Holy Saturday service at 6 p.m. Easter Sunday service will be at 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Along with the many church services listed, there will be many more activities and worship services taking place throughout the weekend. With so many churches found in Selma, local Christians may have no trouble finding a worship service that fits their preference.
