Selma’s firefighters were busy all day long, with three house fires reported in about 12 hours.
The first call came in at 5 a.m. Thursday.
According to department officials, the fire broke out in a home at 713 Third Avenue.
Details on the fire were unavailable as of presstime.
Battallion Chief Lee Cook said the fire started before his shift began, and the information wasn’t available to him.
Cook said his shift did put out two other fires on Union Street and Buckner Street.
The second call, at 822 Union St., came in at 2:57 p.m.
Preliminary reports, according to Cook, indicate the fire started when one of the seven occupants of the home smoked in bed.
The cause won’t be official until an investigation in complete, Cook said.
No injuries were reported from the fire.
Cook did say the fire did severe damage to the home, owned by Catherine Hunter.
“The bedroom where the bed caught on fire was totaled,” Cook said. “There was major smoke damage throughout the house.”
The home was rented by Iona Minniefield. Minnifield lived there with six other family members.
The second fire of Cook’s shift and the third of the day, came in at 4:30 p.m. A kitchen fire started at 213 Buckner Street, at the home of Denise Falls.
“It started by grease on the stove,” Cook said.
Cook said the fire caused major damage in the kitchen, but lighter damage in the rest of the house.
“We had smoke damage throughout,” he said.
Denise Fails lives at the home with her five children and husband, Cook said.
“She just bought it,” Cook said.
