Latesia Shelton was indicted by a Dallas County Grand Jury last month on murder charges for the April 8, 2004 death of her six-month-old baby daughter.
Andrina Brown, daughter of Shelton and Anthony Brown, died at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital last April from multiple fractures to the skull and brain hemorrhaging.
In accordance with state law, hospital physicians reported the infant’s death to the Selma Police Department after they suspected the injuries were caused by child abuse.
Lt. David Evans, public information officer, said the infant had been in the care of a relative when she suddenly became unresponsive and stopped breathing.
She was taken to Vaughan Regional Medical Center and transported to Birmingham, where she died a few days later.
“The infant was diagnosed with blunt force trauma to the head and she had other injuries,” said Evans.
Police ruled the death a homicide and determined the injuries occurred sometime between April 1 and April 5.
Following the death, police said several people had come in contact with the child during that time frame and had a pool of suspects.
Detective Clinton Peeples lead the 10-month long investigation.
District Attorney Michael Jackson said that at the time of her indictment, Shelton, 24, had pled guilty to third-degree theft of property.
“She was placed on probation for stealing baby clothes from Wal-Mart,” Jackson said.
