Earnest L. Jackson
Earnest L. Jackson, 51, of Selma, died Tuesday, February 1, 2005, in Selma.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 5, at Zion No.1 M. P. Church with the Rev. J. D. Fails officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Walker Mortuary directing.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Jackson; mother, Carrie Jackson; two sons, Demarius Jackson and Rolando Stallworth; seven brothers, Robert, William, Jesse, Eddie, Willie, Leonard and Alex; two sisters, Katie Rankins and Joann Stevenson; four brothers-in-law; seven sisters-four nephews; six nieces.
Honorary pallbearers will be family and friends.
Family visitation will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Walker Mortuary.
Nita E. Rattler
Nita E. Rattler, 40, of Selma, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at a Birmingham hospital.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 5, Lily Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Everdale Baptist Church Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis Rattler Sr.; parents, Joseph and Lula Williams Eaton; one son, Curtis T. Eaton Jr.; four daughters, Tiffany N. Eaton, Quinata Q. Eaton, Monique T. Eaton and Monica L. Eaton; six brothers, Jimmie (Debra), Charles (Carolyn), Calvin (Faye), Walter (Patrica), Melvin Eaton, Johnny Eaton (Jackie); five sisters, Ethel Moyd (Henry), Janie Brown (Charles), Mattie Rose (Willie), Betty Walker (Emmitt) and Bobbie Eaton; one grandchild; five brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; and a host of nephews and nieces; and other relatives and friends.
Active pallbearers are sons and nephews.
Family visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. on Friday, at the funeral home.
Arcolia Hickson
Arcolia Hickson, 81, of Selma, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at a local nursing home.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 5, at New Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include daughter-in-law, Theresa A. W. Johnson; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and dear friend, Lillian Henderson.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Claudia Richardson, a son, Donald R. Johnson.
Active pallbearers are grandsons and other relatives.
John Drake Provost
John “Jack” Drake Provost, 82, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005, in Gulfport, Mississippi.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, Gulfport, on Saturday, February 5, 2005, at 5:00 p.m., and the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until service time. Interment will be in the National Cemetery in Biloxi, MS, at a later date.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Alice Greenslit Provost; four daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Ajit Gill, of Los Altos Hills, CA; Judy and Dr. Ronald Stone, of Selma, AL; Nancy Tew, of Lilburn, GA; Sally and Russell Roberts, of Hattiesburg, MS. Thirteen grandchildren also survive, Karam, Andrew, John, and Claire Gill; Geoffrey and Ian Stone; Kristin Bleau Davis and husband, Brian, Matthew, Katie, and Anna Bleau; and Kimberly, Alison, and Kelsey Roberts.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Mary Plummer and Betty Palm.
Mr. Provost was born in Hanson, ID, on June 15, 1922. He was the son of Noel and Nettie Drake Provost, who moved the family to Nebraska when he was four.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a TBF pilot, flying from the carrier U.S.S. Sargent Bay in Iwo Jima and Okinawa landings. Shot down at Chichi Jima, he was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with clusters. Following the war, he continued his University of Nebraska education, graduating with honors in Mechanical Engineering in 1949. He was a member of Sigma Tau, Pi Tau Sigma honorary fraternities and Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity.
His engineering career included work with General Electric Company as a manager in Fort Wayne, IN; Cincinnati, OH; Idaho Falls, ID; Roswell, NM; Santa Maria, CA; and Huntsville, AL. At the NASA Test Site (now Stennis Space Center), he was one of the first G.E. managers working with construction management in the early 1960’s. He also worked in Gulfport, MS, with H. Gordon Myrick and Ray C. Weaver companies. He served as Litton’s representative in California for design of Pascagoula’s ‘Shipyard of the Future’. Overseas he worked as construction manager for Anaconda Mining Company in Iran and Ralph M. Parsons Company, and Owens Corning Company in Saudi Arabia.
Provost and his wife were instrumental in starting a swim team at the Gulfport Yacht Club. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he headed numerous committees, sang in the choir, and was in charge of construction for the Christian Life Center.
He was a charter member of the Gulfport Exchange Club and worked with Habitat for Humanity, Feed My Sheep, and Prison Ministries. He served for seven years as a volunteer for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) in disaster relief work in nine different locations. Mission work included trips to Senegal, St. Croix, and Jamaica. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Atlanta Braves.

Alma T. Sturdivant, 43, of Selma, died Friday, January 28, 2005, at a local hospital.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 5, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Potter Station, with the Rev. D.M. Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include her husband, George Sturdivant; parent Wither L. Carter; three son, Terrell D. Carter, Nicholas Sturdivant and Mario Collins; two daughters, Brittany Sturdivant and Roslyn Sturdivant; five brothers, John H. Carter, Willie F. Smith, MacArthur Miller, Ivan Harris and John Jackson; eight sisters, Voncile McQueen, Annette Hunter, Dorothy Carter, Georgia M. Carter, Deloris Carter, Regina Parker, Iris Knight and April Harris; four brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; eight nephews; and 11 nieces.

Earnestine Cousins-Harris, 95, of Boligee, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at a nursing home in Eutaw.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 5, at Christian Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. William M. Branch officiating. Burial will follow in Taylor Place Cemetery, Boligee, with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.
The body will lie in state at the church on Saturday, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Richard Jackson Sr., 102, of Boligee, died Sunday, January 30, 2005, at his home.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 5, at Paramount Jr. High School Auditorium with Elder Maurice Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Taylor Place Cemetery, Boligee, with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.
