For the second time, the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ACADV) held its quarterly meeting in Selma yesterday at the St. James Hotel.

The Montgomery-based organization, which is made up of 18 domestic violence shelters across the state, was founded to provide assistance to battered women and the shelters that serve them, improve domestic violence laws and educate the public on issues of domestic violence.

“We would like to help end domestic violence and help victims find a safe place so that they can live a life free of abuse,” said Nancy Travis, director of SABRA.

Nearly 50 participants attended the Jan. 25 -28 meeting which was held at the St. James Hotel.

The participants, who represented Alabama’s 18 domestic violence shelters,

worked to prepare themselves for the upcoming legislative session which will convene on Tuesday, Feb. 1. “We have representatives present every day of the session”, said Travis.

In addition, coalition members discussed their role at the Governor’s Conference on Domestic Violence which will be held in Auburn on May 5 and 6.

“This was an important meeting. We trained people on how to work with the legislature, so it geared us up for the legislative session”, said Carol Gundlach, Executive Director for the ACADV.

“Some meetings are better than others, and this was a good meeting. We feel that we were really productive”, said Gundlach.
