A man from Fort Wayne, Ind. was arrested in Selma on Tuesday on charges of check forgery and receiving stolen property.
Acting on a tip from an informant, Selma police apprehended Kevin Murtaugh Tuesday afternoon shortly after he checked-out of the Jameson Inn on Broad Street.
Lt. Susan Smith of the Selma Police Department said investigators received a tip that Murtaugh had cashed stolen checks totaling $500 at two local businesses.
Police also discovered that the 2004 Dodge Durango the suspect was driving had been reported stolen from a Fort Wayne, Ind. car dealership.
In addition to the forged checks and stolen vehicle accusations, reports show Murtaugh was in possession of computer-generated checks at the time of his arrest.
“The suspect had been in Selma for the past two or three days,” Smith said. “It is very possible the suspect was passing fake checks at other businesses around town.”
Smith said the computer-generated checks had Michigan addresses on them.
“We are checking his background and looking into whether he was written fake checks in other places,” Smith said.
After Murtaugh was arrested, he refused to cooperate with police or give them his real name.
Smith said police had to eventually find his identity by searching a criminal database.
“We are asking businesses to notify police if they believe they have received a forged check from this suspect,” Smith said.
Murtaugh was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery and receiving stolen property.
He was taken to the Dallas County Jail on a $15,000 bond.
Smith said additional counts could be added as the investigation continues.
