Godwin

Melanie Chandler Godwin, 85, of Montgomery, formerly of Selma, died Friday, January 7, 2005, in a Montgomery hospital. Graveside Funeral Services will be at 2:30 P.M. Sunday January 9, 2005 at Pineview Memory Gardens with Minister Terry Gunnells officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Godwin is survived by daughters, Evelyn Martin and her husband, John, of Jackson, Miss. and Maggie Godwin Johnson of Montgomery; brother, Jack Chandler of Selma, grandchildren, Debbie Godwin Akin of Selma, Don Johnson of California, James Godwin of Selma, Elaine Cobern and her husband Joe of Georgia; great-grandson Joey Cobern of Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Johnson, her daughter, Frieda Joyce Moody, and her son, Bo Godwin.

Active pallbearers will be James Godwin, Curtis Moorer, Don Johnson, Edric Godwin, Joe Cobern, and Joey Cobern. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family encourages donations to your favorite charity.

Anita Hyde Hutchings

Anita Hyde Hutchings died at her home on Friday, January 7, 2005. Funeral Services will be at 1:30 P.M. Sunday, January 9, 2005, at Church Street United Methodist Church with Rev. George Sedberry officiating. Burial will be held in the New Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Serving as pallbearers are John Blanton, Louis Colley, Richard Morthland, Larry Lewis, Jimmy Ingram, and William Perkins.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Mary Sweeney Friendship Class.

Mrs. Hutchings was born October 3, 1923 in Water Valley, Miss., the daughter of Ervin Felix and Zera Pass Hyde.

She was raised in Memphis, Tenn. where she received her BA degree from Southwestern University (now Rhodes College). She was a member of Mortar Board and Delta Delta Delta. Upon graduation, she was employed by International Business Machines as a systems service analyst.

In 1949, she came to Selma as the bride of Frank Williams Hutchings, Jr.

She was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church serving in various capacities and as a member of the Administrative Board.

Mrs. Hutchings was employed by the Peoples Bank and Trust Company for 26 years.

She earned a degree from LSU School of Banking of the South.

She retired as Vice-President and Controller of the Peoples Bank and Trust in 1989.

For 20 years, she served on numerous committees of the West Central Alabama Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center and Chairman of the Executive Board 1996-1998.

She served in various civic and community activities including a Board of Directors member for the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, the Selma Charity League, Selma-Dallas County Historical Association, Selma Community Concert Association, and Trellis Garden Club.

Mrs. Hutchings was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Frank Williams Hutchings, Jr. on October 2, 1991. She is survived by two daughters: Judy Hutchings Berneske of Birmingham, and Jane Hutchings Purcell (Mrs. Mel Purcell) of Brentwood, Tenn. and two grandchildren, Blair Elizabeth Purcell of Sacramento, Calif. and Kent Austin Purcell of Auburn University.

Other relatives include brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Mary Hutchings Blanton, nephews and nieces, Barry Scott Blanton, John Hutchings Blanton, and Margaret Blanton Colley (Mrs. Louis Colley). She has eight surviving first cousins including Ron Pass (and wife Lee) of Prattville

Barbara Victoria Yarbrough Carder

Barbara Victoria Yarbrough Carder, 75, of Selma died Thursday January 6, 2005 in a Chattanooga, Tenn. hospital. Graveside Services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday January 9, 2005 at New Live Oak Cemetery directed by Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home. Mrs. Carder is survived by her son, Charles Timothy Carder and his wife Sonia S. Carder of Chattanooga, Tenn;

granddaughter, Caitlin Carder of Chattanooga, Tenn.; sister, Leona Y Anderson of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister-in-law, Winnifred Yarbrough of Selma; and several nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ella Ree Yarbrough and her brother Tommy Yarbrough. The family will receive friends a Lawrence Funeral Home from 1:00 to 2:30 on Sunday. In lieu of flowers the family encourages donations to The American Cancer Society.

MARY ELLEN WILLIAMS

Mary Ellen Richardson Williams died Saturday, Dec. 11 in a local hospital. Services

will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, in historic Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church. The Revs. Joseph Rembert of Montgomery and James Jackson will officiate.

Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers are members of Chesterfield and Twelve High clubs.

Mrs. Williams was born in Hamner, Alabama on Sept. 11, 1917, the daughter of Thomas Knight Richardson and Emma Cleopatra Calhoun Richardson and the last of seven siblings. She received her early education in Sumter County, completing it at Selma University, where she met her future husband, Fred D. Williams Jr. She completed her higher education at Alabama State University.

The Williams married Nov. 6, 1935. They were the parents of two sons, Fred Williams III and Charles Anthony Williams, who preceded them in death.

Mrs. Williams took an active role in community, church and civic affairs. A member of Brown Chapel since 1935, she was a longtime choir member, also lending her beautiful voice to other occasions. She was a founding member of the Entre Nous Club and also a member of Delta Sigma Sorority.

In 1979 she was appointed to the Selma City School Board and reappointed in 1984, serving one term as board chairman. Mrs. Williams served under three Superintendents of

Education:

Dr. Joseph Pickard, Dr. Martha Barton and Dr. Norward Roussell.

Survivors are her son, Fred D. Williams III, three granddaughters, Kay Williams and her husband Earl Johnson, Kimberly Joyce Dillon and her husband, John, Clementine Melton, and two grandsons, Charles Anthony Williams Jr. and James Henry Williams, and four great-granddaughters.

Other survivors are her sister, Juanita Richardson Sherrod, several nieces and other relatives.

Zela Lore Schell, 64, of Selma passed away January 7, 2005 at her residence.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 9, 2005, 5-7:00 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, January 10, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lee Tate and Rev. David Thomas officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing. Interment will be in New Live Oak Cemetary.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. David W. Schell; one daughter, Kymm Barton of Gadsden, AL; 2 brothers, Mack Braswell III of Raytown, MO and Paul Braswell of Lee’s Summit, MO; one sister, Mary Braswell-Willis, Bryant AR and 2 grandchildren, Pamella Spurlock, Amy Spurlock and John Spurlock.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mack and Margaret Braswell.

Zela received her Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences at Livingston University.

Jean Harrell Wormely

Jean Harrell Wormely, 65, of Selma, died Tuesday, January 4, 2005, at a Birmingham hospital.

Services will be held at 12 noon Monday, January 10, at West Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. A. Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Lincoln Cemetery with J.H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include two sons, Marshall Earl Wormely and Daniel Anthony Wormely of Selma; one daughter, Carnetta Rene’ Wormely of Selma; one brother, Earnest (Paola) Harrell of Phoenix, Ariz.; four sisters, Nancy (John) Jones of Uniontown, Mary Harrell and Hattie Sams of New Orleans, La., and Billie (Carver) Clinton of Jan Jose, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; nephews, nieces and other relatives.

Ms. Wormely was preceded in death by one son, Richard, and her parents, William and Arrilla Harrell.

Active pallbearers are friends of the family.

Honorary pallbearers are Deacons of Morning Star Baptist Church.

Joseph E. Peasant

Joseph E. Peasant, died Tuesday, January 4, 2005.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 10, 2005 at Hopewell Baptist Church in Richmond, with Reverend Boykins officiating. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Memorial Garden in Selma, with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include two daughters, JoAnn Daniel of Richmond, and Joyce (Arnold) Brown of Montgomery.; one son, Eddie (Jeanette) Peasant Sr. of Mobile; two sisters, Mable Farris of Montgomery and Annie Brown of Atlanta, Georgia; two brothers, George (Emma) Peasant of Talladega and Clarence (Dorothy) Peasant of Birmingham; seven grandchildren, Ashleigh Brown and Anson Brown of Montgomery, David Daniel of Richmond, Davida Hall of Marietta, Ga., Eddie Peasant Jr. of Brandon, Miss., Juan Peasant and Terrence Peasant of Mobile; seven great-grandchildren, Brooke Hall and Justin Hall of Marietta, Ga., Branton Peasant, Cameron Peasant, Essence Peasant, Jordan Peasant and Logan Peasant all of Mobile; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Moss Peasant; three brothers, Josie Peasant, David Peasant, and Willis Peasant; and one sister, Patsy Peasant Adams.

Joseph E. Peasant was born on November 9, 1922 to the union of Joseph and Georgia Mills Peasant in Richmond. He was the youngest of their eight children. Joseph attended school at E.M. Brown Training School in Richmond. He received further educational training from Wallace Community College in Selma.

Joseph worked for International Paper for several years. He also owned several businesses around the Dallas County area. In October 1991, Joseph was appointed as chairman of the Dallas County Board of Voter Registration. Joseph was a loving brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend.
