Candidates for Selma’s Municipal Judge job will have to wait two more days before the interview process can begin, according to Selma City Councilman Reid Cain.

Cain said in a release that instead of meeting with the applicants yesterday at 3 p.m., the interviews were pushed back to Thursday, at 4 p.m.

“Due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control and unavailability of council members, we are rescheduling the interviews,” the release read.

Cain, as chairman of the city’s Public Safety Committee, is charged with arranging the interview times with the rest of the committee and the City Council.

Council members were unable to coordinate their schedules to allow them to be a part of the interview process.

“All council members wanted to interview the candidates and the majority of them would not be available today,” Cain said. “We chose to change the interviews.”

Cain said the decision was made with Council President George Evans.

“The Public Safety Committee apologizes for any inconvenience to the candidates scheduled for interview today,” the release stated.

Originally, Cain said Council members would submit questions to the Public Safety Committee for the applicants.

Cain said a letter was delivered to the City Council members mail boxes at City Hall requesting their questions or presence at the interviews on Dec. 29.

The city currently has an interim municipal judge, appointed by Mayor James Perkins Jr. Christmas Green, one of the applicants for the job, is serving in the temporary position already.

Nine other applicants have applied for the position.

Cain said the position calls for either one full-time judge or two part-time judges.

He said it would depend on the final decision made by the council.

The review process, Cain said, is identical to the process used to chose replacement members for the city school board.

The only exception is the questions submitted by the City Council.

The new interview date for applicants is set for Thursday, at 4 p.m.

The interviews are still open to the public and Cain said that any citizens with questions should contact their individual Council members or him prior to the meeting.
