It was the first time the two teams had ever met.
But the Morgan Academy Lady Senators made their opponents Thursday wish they would never face each other again.
Morgan Academy came out with their best defensive showing of the season with a 69-6 beating of the Central Christian Academy Lady Warriors.
The Lady Senators, 9-1 and ranked sixth in the state’s recent AISA girls’ poll, held Central Christian (2-7) scoreless in the third period and coasted to the win.
“It’s hard to tell if we got anything out of the game,” Morgan Academy coach Robert Gartman said. “They have a very young team and we have a lot of seniors.
“This game was obviously somewhat of a mismatch,” Gartman added. “I was pleased with the way our young kids came in off the bench. They executed very well and played good defense.”
Shardane Rose and Jessica Allday sank baskets in the first and second quarters to account for Central Christian’s only points of the first half.
Meanwhile, Morgan Academy guard Kyser Youngblood capped a first-half defensive show put on by Morgan Academy.
Youngblood had a pair of half-court steals and took them both the distance for easy lay-ups as the Lady Senators enjoyed a 34-4 halftime lead.
The story remained the same in the third period.
Morgan Academy continued its half-court press, attacking the young Lady Warriors’ offense and converting their turnovers into fast-break opportunities.
Cursey Oaks slipped the ball away from a CCA player before the Lady Warriors even got to mid-court. Oaks took the ball the rest of the way for another quick lay-up and a 40-4 lead.
After another Morgan Academy steal, Caroline Woodruff started a 3-2 Lady Senators’ break and eventually finished it with a 10-footer from the right wing that made it a 47-4 game.
Morgan Academy moved out to a 51-4 lead after three periods.
Morgan Academy stretched its lead to 59-4 before Central Christian Academy’s next points. Allday hit a jumper from the top of the key to make it 59-6.
However, Morgan Academy scored the game’s final 10 points, many off CCA turnovers.
Youngblood finished off the Lady Warriors with a pair of steals and uncontested lay-ups, and Ann Larkin Oaks chipped in a putback to cap the scoring.
Alison Peak led the Lady Senators with 18 points. She was followed by Elizabeth Elliott with 11 points. Youngblood and Ali Bradford chipped in eight points apiece for the victors.
