Five players scored in double figures Saturday night and the Selma High Lady Saints beat host Anniston, 83-50.
The Lady Saints, ranked seventh in the Alabama Sports Writers Association state poll, improved to 6-2 on the season and 2-1 in the area.
Senior Santana Seay led the Lady Saints with 18 points. She also had seven assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Senior Ashley Green, sophomore Erica Lumpkin and junior Shemeka Simpson each scored 16 points. Freshman Gabrielle Goudy added 13 points and five rebounds.
The Lady Saints jumped out to an 18-9 first-quarter lead and enjoyed a 42-27 halftime advantage.
Despite the easy win, Selma coach Anthony Harris was critical of his team’s performance. Selma had 19 turnovers against Anniston.
“I’m still looking for leadership on this team,” Harris said. “If my backcourt would step up, play some tough defense and be more aggressive, we’ll be okay. But we can’t have 19 turnovers in no basketball game.”
Harris added that freshman Richelle Jones continues to improve every game and will be a plus as the season continues.
The Lady Saints will host Keith on Tuesday before traveling to Decatur to compete in the River City Classic next Tuesday.
In boys’ action, John Daily’s 20-point evening wasn’t enough on Saturday as the Saints dropped a 61-50 decision to the Anniston Bulldogs.
Daily scored on lay-ups and jumpers to keep the Saints close at halftime. Anniston held a slim 27-26 lead at intermission.
The second half, however, was a different story as the Saints went cold from the field. Robert Childers kept Selma in the game with his shooting, along with center Eric Martinear, who scored nine points.
The Bulldogs, however, proved too much for the Saints and pulled away with the victory. Childers finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for Selma.
In boys’ B-team action, Selma dropped a heartbreaker to Anniston, 46-44.
Selma was led by Danzel Reese and Algertino Brown with eight points apiece. Cameron Turner added seven points, followed by Michael Givhan with six points.
