Junior Jimmy Smith scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Selma High School Saints beat the Robert E. Lee Generals, 55-51, Friday night in Montgomery.
Senior John Dailey scored the Saints’ first six points of the game. Lee’s Terrance Douglas answered with a 15-footer and teammate Andrew Glover dropped in a layup to cut Selma’s lead to 8-6.
With 3:52 to go in the first quarter, Selma junior Quin Pernell stole the ball from Douglas and hit a slam-dunk to put the Saints ahead 10-6. After a series of both teams trading baskets, the Saints led 16-11 after the first period.
Douglas scored on a give-and-go in the second quarter, then added a three-point play to tie the game at 16. The Generals’ next two possessions resulted in a three-pointer by Douglas and another quick bucket to put Lee ahead, 21-16.
After a Lee free throw made it 22-16, Edgar Brown scored a basket and Dailey drained a pair of three-pointers to put Selma ahead 24-22. The Generals, however, came back to take a 28-24 halftime lead.
Junior Cajun Pritchett brought his ‘A’ game, scoring 13 points in the period. The Saints took a 39-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
Smith put the Saints up by 10 and Brown hit Pernell with a bounce pass for another basket to give the Saints a 43-31 advantage.
Smith scored on the Saints’ next three possessions to make it a 51-40 lead. Lee cut the margin to three points with 49.4 seconds to go, but Brown hit one of two foul shots to give Selma the victory.
