Less aggressive Jaguars fall to Central-Hayneville

One night after playing one of their most aggressive games of the young season, the Wilcox Central Jaguars had a relapse.
The Jaguars were out-jumped, out-shot and out-played Saturday night in a 59-35 loss to the Central-Hayneville Lions in the finals of the Lions’ Holiday Tournament held at Southside High School.
On Friday night, the Jaguars showed their aggressive side in an 80-41 whipping of Calhoun. The Jaguars constantly attacked the basket with driving layups and went after their opponents with a swarming zone defense that led to several transition baskets.
However, it was a much different story against Central-Hayneville. The Jaguars, who also suffered their first loss of the season, played much less aggressive than their earlier performance.
“We weren’t in sync tonight,” Wilcox Central coach Mark Dukes said. “We didn’t come out with the same intensity as we did (Friday) night.”
The reason for the Jaguars’ times of timid play were twofold. Senior center Yamene Coleman drew three quick fouls in the first half and spent a great deal of the second quarter on the bench. When Coleman was on the court, he was regularly double-teamed by Lions’ forwards Jerman Blackmon and Antwane Rudolph.
Coleman also contested few jumps in the fear of drawing additional fouls. That allowed Blackmon and Rudolph to out-jump the Jaguars’ big man inside for rebounds and tipped balls.
“I don’t know what the problem is,” Dukes said. “(Coleman’s) going to face a lot of double-teams. I’ll have to talk to him.”
A driving layup by forward Allen Crumpton tied the game at 7. The proverbial wheels came off from there for the Jaguars (4-1).
Coleman was hit with a personal foul followed by a technical foul. Although Central-Hayneville’s Latravis Brazil made just 2-of-4 foul shots, it gave the Lions a 13-7 lead and set the pace for the evening.
Leading 13-9, Central-Hayneville scored a pair of quick baskets, including one off a steal by guard Jesse Harris, who slapped the ball away from Wilcox Central’s Trevell Coleman and went in for the layup. Blackmon followed with a jumper from the top of the key to give the Lions a 17-9 edge.
From there, the Lions went on a 13-4 run to extend their lead to 28-13. Central-Hayneville once again was the aggressor on the boards. The Lions blocked the Jaguars off the boards while grabbing one offensive rebound after another and converting them into baskets.
Blackmon leaped for an offensive board and tipped it back in to make it 19-11.
The Lions also were aggressive on the baseline, attacking the Jaguars’ defense at will. Driving on the left baseline, harris sent a bounce pass to Tramayne Moorer on the other side of the basket for an easy layup and a 24-13 Lions’ lead.
Brandon Turner followed with a jumper at the top of the key, then followed his own missed layup with a tip-in to make it 28-13.
The only thing that kept the game from being a blow-out at halftime was Cortez Irby’s three-pointer from the left corner that brought the Jaguars to within a dozen at 28-16.
“He’s going to have to be more offensive-minded,” Dukes said. “This was one of the few nights he wasn’t aggressive. It was one of our worst nights.”
