Shooting victims recover

The bullet entered 27-year-old Anthony Crusoe through the back.

It traveled cleanly through his body and came out the other side, striking the girl he was dancing with.

Much of what happened after that is a blur for the survivor of the now infamous shooting at Donnie Roy’s nightclub last Sunday.

Crusoe, who was also hit in the navel, passed out while waiting for medical help and talking to the police.

He woke up with tubes sticking out of his chest.

“They operated on me as soon as I got (to the emergency room),” he said. “I didn’t even know I was being operated on.”

Crusoe was one of the lucky ones.

He survived.

Two others, Robert Fails Jr. and Antonio Boggans did not.

Still, recovery could be a slow process for Crusoe and the seven others wounded in last Sunday morning’s shootout.

“I’m doing pretty fair,” he said from his home where he’s recovering from his wounds.

However, he adds that he’s not sure when he will be better.

He’s sore and suffering from recurring numbness in his right hip and leg.

“I don’t know what it (the shooting) started about or nothing,” Crusoe said. “That was my first time going out (to the club). I didn’t expect none of that to happen.”

When the shooting began, Dewayne Thomas was on the dance floor like Crusoe.

A bullet struck him in the right arm.

“There’s a lot of pain,” Thomas said of his arm he still can’t use. “It’s better than what it was, but it’s still hurting.

My arm was hurting real bad.”

Thomas is unsure of what happened once the shooting started and he was hit.

“I was dancing,” he said. “Once I got shot the (others in the club) pushed me down to the floor.”

Doctors estimate it could be five months before Thomas regains full use of his arm.

Both Thomas and Crusoe said the club was packed when the shooting began.

At least two of the victims were in the hospital as of press time on Sunday.

Theodore Barlowe and Cahvondee Thompson are both in the hospital, according to their respective mothers.

Still, they are lucky.

Both Boggans and Fails were buried on Sunday.

Two of the victims could not be reached for comment.

Police arrested another victim. Cornelius “Fat” Ford on charges of murdering Fails. Ford is also charged with two counts of first-degree assault. He’s currently being held at the Dallas County Jail without bond.

Ford was arrested at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. He was released into police custody after being treated for a gunshot wound in his jaw.

Police said when they arrested Ford that information on a second shooter was still being sought.

Attempts to contact Donnie Roy Stewart, owner of the club, were unsuccessful. Boggan’s family is planning to file a wrongful death suit against the club next week, according to the family attorney, Mike Slocomb, from Montgomery.

Police are still looking for information on the shooting. A $1,0000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Police urge anyone who knows anything to contact Crime Stoppers at 334-874-3530, the SPD Secret Witness Line at 334-874-2190 or the SPD detective division at 334-874-2125.
