This Saturday the best and brightest talents in Selma will be volunteering their time to entertain crowds and help provide food for the needy.
The staff of Taylor Internal Medicine of Selma, along with Amedisys Home Health and Nation Corp, Inc., has teamed up with the Selma Area Food Bank to host the first ever “Selma Together Talent Showcase” at J.A. Pickard Auditorium from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Lynn Henderson, one of the organizers of the event, said the idea for the talent show came about after Dr. Bruce Taylor’s staff learned the food bank has had a hard time filling its shelves after Hurricane Ivan.
“It really seemed like a worthy cause,” Henderson said. “This is an organization right here at home that needs our help. To us, it’s personal.”
Several different local talents, including African dancers, church choirs, students from Selma and Southside High Schools, and several other individuals will be performing throughout the night.
“Admission to the talent show is one canned good,” Henderson said. “All of it goes to supporting the Selma Area Food Bank.”
Henderson added the performers are planning to put on a great show and it should be a fun night for all those who attend.
“I think what they are doing for us is great,” said George “Buddy” Wiltsie, Executive Director of the food bank. “We always need help from the community and any amount is beneficial to people in need.”
Wiltsie added that the results of Hurricane Ivan have depleted the food bank’s supply while increasing the number of needy families throughout the area. Henderson says she is hoping a large number of Selma residents will come out to support the talent show and give to the food bank.
“We just want people to help with a good cause and have a good time at the show,” she said.
