ORRVILLE – The Keith Bears picked up their first win of the season Friday night, beating the R.C. Hatch Bobcats, 34-8.

The loss extended the Bobcats’ state record losing streak.

The Bears’ game plan was to utilize their young fullback Jatavius Turner, which they did.

Keith’s special teams blocked a Hatch punt to set up its offense.

The Keith offense took advantage of the field position with a 4-play, 30-yard scoring drive capped by Turner’s 2-yard run at the 7:36 mark of the first quarter. Turner also ran in the two-point conversion to give the Bears an 8-0 lead.

On Hatch’s following drive, the Keith defense held, forcing the Bobcats to turn the ball over on downs at the 4:55 of the first period, giving the Bears another shot for the end zone. Keith wasted little time and found the end zone one more time in the first quarter. Turner scored on a 38-yard rushing touchdown at the 2:07 mark to up the score to 14-0. The two-point conversion failed. The Bobcats tried to get some momentum before the second period, but quarterback Eric Sullivan’s pass was intercepted by Bears’ senior linebacker Deidre Scott with 44.1 seconds to go in the opening period.

Keith opened the second quarter with a 25-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Charles Jones from quarterback Ladarrius Jones to make it 20-0 at the 11:04 mark. The two-conversion try failed.

The Bobcats failed to get their running game going and once again turned the ball over on downs with 3:12 to go in the first half. The Bears took advantage on their next drive when halfback Deontae Millhouse fired a pass to Charles Jones for an 8-yard scoring toss with 39.2 seconds left before halftime. The Bobcats returned the ensuing kickoff 26 yards to the Keith 39. Two plays later, Sullivan connected with Edward Jones on a 35-yard touchdown reception with 17.7 seconds to go in the first half. Sullivan also converted the two-point conversion on a quarterback sneak to cut the deficit to 26-8 at the half.

R.C. Hatch held the ball for most of the third quarter, mixing up its plays on offense. Meanwhile, the Bears had to wait patiently for their chance.

Keith finally got its opportunity minutes later and cashed in on running back Joshua Aguero’s 50-yard scoring pass Jones to put the Bears comfortably ahead 32-8 with 6:30 to go in the game.

The Bears’ defense got a break when Sullivan went back to pass and slipped in the end zone for a safety at the 6:10 mark to make it 34-8.

Leo Vaughn led the Keith ground game 89 yards on nine carries. Turner had 88 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Aguero added 59 tough yards on 12 carries.

Ladarrius Jones completed 2-of-6 passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Aguero led the Bears with 50 yards receiving and a score. Charles Jones had a good night with 33 yards on two receptions, both for touchdowns.

R.C. Hatch hosts Francis Marion next Friday.

Keith hosts Southside next week.
