A local alleged thief may have taken a cue from the popular Johnny Cash song “One Piece at a Time.”
Terry Bennett, while working
at Bush Hog, allegedly took equipment for the company piece by piece and used it to build Bush Hog products at another location and sold them.
The Orrville resident is facing charges he stole equipment from the company.
After a four-month long investigation by the Selma Police Department, the Dallas County Grand Jury returned an indictment against 38-year-old Bennett for theft.
Selma police arrested the suspect Monday on the felony charge of first degree theft.
The investigation centered on the more than $200,000 worth of property missing from the company in cases dating back as far as five years.
Police believe Bennett, who worked on assembly at Bush Hog, stole items from the manufacturing company in pieces, then reassembled and sold the products or sold the individual pieces.
The investigation also revealed that property was taken from both of Bush Hog’s Selma locations.
Sgt. Jimmy Martin, the lead investigator in the case, said he discovered the connection between the missing property and the suspect through “good police work and good investigating”
“After interviewing several people and putting things together, I was able to figure out how the thefts were taking place.”
Martin said his investigation is still ongoing and he is still recovering Bush Hog property.
So far, around $100,000 worth of Bush Hog property has been recovered and investigators are expecting to seize even more as their work continues.
Though the character in Cash’s song managed avoid prosecution, those involved in the Bush Hog case may not be so lucky.
Martin said that he believes Bennett did not act alone and more arrests are forthcoming.
Bennett was transported to the Dallas County Jail and is being held under a $10,000 bond in accordance with the Grand Jury recommendation.
This arrest marks the 30th felony arrest by the Selma Police Department this month.
