Lady Senators win again

The Morgan Academy varsity volleyball team improved to 13-3 on the season with a three-game sweep of visiting Taylor Road on Tuesday.
The Lady Senators opened a 5-0 lead in the first game and went on to win the opener, 25-4. MA squeaked out a 25-23 victory in the second game before taking the final game, 25-19.
Morgan Academy got solid
service from Kayla Pegues, Elizabeth Wood and Elizabeth Elliott. Mallory Forte, Carrie Glover and Glennis Bradsell played solid defense, while Caroline Woodruff and Kyser Youngblood stood out for their strong outside hitting. Ashley Harrison played well off the bench for the Lady Senators.
“The girls played really well,” MA coach Rick Blevins said. “Our defense was very good.”
Prior to the varsity match, Taylor Road won the junior varsity contest in three games. The Lady Senators won the first game, 25-18, but lost the next to games to their visitors from Montgomery, 25-23 and 25-22.
“The last two games went down to the wire,” Blevins said. “The girls did really well. Taylor Road usually has a very good team over there.”
Standouts for Morgan Academy were Laura Lee Logan, Sarah Hughey, Jaye Lynn Lawrence, Shelby Thorpe, Anna Ralston and Erica Friday.
On Monday, Morgan defeated Marion Academy and Wilcox Academy in a tri-match at Wilcox Academy
The Lady Senators beat Marion, 25-10 and 25-21, then went on to beat Wilcox Academy 25-4, 25-22, and 25-19.
Standouts for the matches were outside hitters Kyser Youngblood, Caroline Woodruff and Elizabeth Elliott, setters Elizabeth Wood, Mallory Forte and defenders Kayla Pegues, Glennis Bradsell, Ashley Harrison, Leslie Britton and Carrie Glover.
Morgan’s match with Marion Academy on Thursday has been postponed. The junior varsity tournament on Saturday at Kingwood Christian has been rescheduled due to Hurricane Ivan. The tentative reschedule date is Oct. 9 at Kingwood Christian.
