Back to business as usual for MCS Trojans

The Meadowview Christian School Trojans have been riding on cloud nine since their 44-7 victory over Jefferson Christian Academy last Friday night, Meadowview’s first victory since 2001.
But now the time for exuberance and celebration is over. According to MCS head coach Rick Jackson, the Trojans are working hard this week, searching for their second consecutive victory tonight against Evangel. The game will be played at Calvary Christian beginning at 7:30 p.m.
“Obviously they’re very uptempo,” Jackson said. “They’re riding a cloud right now and they should be. But it’s also one of my concerns.
“The hangover’s a major concern of mine,” Jackson added. “But once they got to the practice field on Tuesday, they were focused on what they had to do.”
Since Monday was Labor Day, the Trojans, along with many other teams, took the day off from practice. However, they were back into full gear Tuesday.
Jackson said while his team is flying high after their first win in three years, they also must remember an important lesson.
“Last week was good,” he said. “But you’re only as good as your last game.”
The Trojans open their area schedule this week against Evangel. The two teams share common defeats, both losing to Abbeville.
Evangel features a speedy backfield which includes a blazing quick tailback.
While Jackson could not recall the Evangel tailback’s name, he said his defense will see plenty of him tonight.
“He’s not a very big player,” Jackson said, “but he’s quick. He’s a natural. He changes directions very well.”
The only downside to last week’s win was the fact that the MCS defense surrendered 155 yards passing.
“Maybe they’ll throw the ball a little more because of that,” Jackson said. “We have to be ready for that.
“Our whole game plan focuses around our execution,” he added. “We have to go in there and execute. It has to be a total team effort. All 23 players have to contribute.”
Jackson said that lesson in itself was one of several the Trojans learned during their victory last week.
“They learned,” he said, “that if you approach each day working hard in order to get better and you execute, that you have a chance to win.
“I’m not sure they understood that before,” Jackson added. “But I’m sure they understand it now. The question is, can we repeat that?”
Jackson also said Ryan King, who missed last week’s game with a fractured right ankle, was still not ready to go this week. Jackson said he hoped that King would be available next week.
