Reuben Washington

Reuben Washington, 90, of Selma, died Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at a local hospital.

Services were held Saturday, September 4, at the Chapel of Lewis Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. James A. Spicer officiating. Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife Ella Washington; one son, Fernando J. Shine; five daughters, Ruby Lana, Delores Guest, Barbara Triplett, Martha Hall and Anglinia Washington; one brother, Willie Washington; one sister, Estelle Ellis; 13 grandchildren; one daughter-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Emma Washington.

Active pallbearers were nephews.

Mary Lee Wright

Mary Lee Wright, 80, of Selma, died Tuesday, August 31, 2004, at her home.

Services are at 12 noon, Monday, September 6, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery with Walker Mortuary directing.

Survivors included one son, Ernest W. Wright Jr.; two daughters, Juanita W. Ellis and Ernestine W. Perkins; one sister, Ruth Bell Moore; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one son-in-law; one daughter-in-law; and one sister-in-law.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Wilse Reese and parents.

Active pallbearers are Selma High football team.

Honorary pallbearers are grandsons.

Mrs. Wright was a member of Ebenezer Church. She worked faithfully with the Missionary and was one of the founding pillars of the Chapel of Hope Ministry.

Delois Eaton Moyd

Delois Eaton Moyd, of Rochester, N.Y., died Tuesday, August 24, 2004 in Rochester, N.Y.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 30, at Northside Church of Christ in Rochester, N.Y. Burial followed in Falls Cemetery with Metropolitan Funeral Chapel directing.

Survivors include her husband, Benjamin F. Moyd Sr.; one daughter, Tonia Gamble (Terry); one son, Benjamin Jr. (Veona); father and mother, Joseph and Lula Eaton of Selma; six brothers, Jimmie (Debbie), Charles (Carolyn), Calvin (Faye), Walter Eaton, Melvin (Sylvia), Johnny (Jackie) all of Selma; six sisters, Ethel Moyd (Henry), Mattie Rose (Willie), Janie Brown (Charles), Anita Rattler (Curtis) all of Selma, Bobby Eaton of Mobile, Betty Walker (Emmett) of Rochester, N. Y.: five grandchildren; in-laws, Louis (Ella), Perry (Irene), A.C. (Nell) Moyd of Rochester, N.Y., Hayward (Sallie) Moyd of Andrews SC., Thomasthel Johnson, Roselee Allen, Rebecca Gee, Maryann (Haddick) Wilson of Rochester, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives, friends and spiritual brothers and sisters.

She was preceded in death by one brother Joe C. Eaton of Selma.

Active pallbearers are Carl King, Mike Mason, Reginald Terry, William Johnson, Steve Worner and Andre TubbSister.

She will be dearly missed by all whom she leaves behind.

Mrs. Moyd was born on July 26, 1950 in Selma, to Joseph and Lula (Williams) Eaton. She Was the fifth of 16 children. She joined the Beach Island Baptist Church at an early age. Delois graduated from Brantley High School on May 1968.

She moved to Rochester, New York in 1969. She later was baptized at Northside Church of Christ in 1974. Until her passing she served faithfully at the Westside Church of Christ.

Delois worked various jobs ranging from babysitting, foster-care, nurse assistant and recent job as a receptionist at Xerox Corporation.

Christine Ncube

Christine Ncube, 52, of Milwaukee, Wis., died Tuesday, August 31, 2004..

A farewell celebration was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at Concordia College Chapel, 1804 Green St. Selma, with Miller Funeral Home directing.

She is survived by her husband, Zibusiso (Zet); daughters Tonya and Tennille; sons Ngqabutho and Nkanysio; mother Dicly Boyd; brothers Allen Sr., Anthony, Henry, Dennis; and sisters Martha Baldwin, Kim Wesson, and Yvonne; loving grandson Armani Hughes; She is further survived by sisters-in-law Londiwe, Samukeliso, Sibongile; and brothers-in-law Dumilizwe, Sekulungile, Jabulani, Dingilizwe; and several nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother Raymond.

Christine’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to friends, doctors, and hospital staff for all their loving care and devotion. Also, the family is requesting that no flowers be sent. Instead, a Christine Ncube Memorial Scholarship Endowment is being established at Concordia College-Selma, AL.

Geneva Douglas

Geneva Douglas, 96, of Selma, died Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at her home.

Services are at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 8, at New Sister Spring Baptist Church, with Pastor Christopher Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Fairlawn Memory Gardens with J. H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home

Survivors include her nine loving children, James k. Douglas (Rev. Ella) of Selma; Joretha Douglas McCorvey (Rev. Albert) of Columbus, Ga., Essie Douglas Dawson of Selma, Lorena Douglas Smith (Arthur) of Red Hook, N. Y., Wenola Douglas Sanders (John) of Oak Park, Ill., Abraham Douglas, Jr. (Ida) and Rev. Joseph Douglas (Carol) of Cleveland, Ohio, Benjamin Douglas (Viola) of Kansas City, Mo., and Gwendolyn Douglas Edmonson (W. T.) of Jefferson City, Mo.; one sister, Mother Mary Bender Howell; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, church family, neighbors, and friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Laura Bell Weaver, one brother Jesse Brown, and one grandchild, John Damon Sanders.

Family visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Douglas was born August 10, 1908, in Farmersville, to the late Holcomb and Lorena Smith Brown. In 1933, she was united in holy matrimony to Rev. A. B. Douglas who preceded her in death in 1993. Their union was blessed with nine children.

In addition to being a loving wife, mother, and a homemaker she was a Selma business woman who owned and operated Geneva’s Hat Shop, located on Franklin Street, for over 25 years and became known as the “hat lady”

Mrs. Douglas, a devout Christian, accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a member of New Sister Spring Baptist Church for over 60 years where she was “Mother of the Church” and was known as “Mother Douglas”. She had taught Sunday School, worked with the youth of the church, and served as President of the Women’s Missionary Union for many years and holds the distinction of being “Women’s Missionary Union President Emeritus”. She also served as “First Lady” of several AME Churches under the pastorate of her husband, the late Rev. A. B. Douglas.

Geraldine Ricketts Corbin

Geraldine Ricketts Corbin, 77, of Waverland, Miss., formerly of Thomasville, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at Hancock Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Sept. 9, 2004, at the Choctaw Corner Cemetery with the Dr. James Best officiationg.

She was a retired utiltiies speaclist with the Department of Energy.

Survivors include her husband, Phillip Lee Corbin, of Waveland, Miss.; daughters, Denise Neam and Sandra Page, both of of Frisco, Texas; brothers, Tommy Ricketts of Dothan, Otis Ricketts of Valdosta, Ga., Carl B. Ricketts of New Orleans; sisters, Thelma Tant of Oxford, Sue Richter of Snyder, Texas; granddaughter, Gina Wolf of Fairfax, Va.; grandson, Michael Tarr of Fredericksburg, Va.; great-grandchildren, Fraz Tarr and Analise Wolf, both of Fairfax, Va.

Bessie L. Fleeton-Gray

Bessie L. Fleeton-Gray, 65, of Davenport, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5,

at Rehobeth Missionary Church with the Rev. Julius Buskey officiating.

Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with Bell Funeral Home Directing.
