If dealing with a speedy Shelby team wasn’t enough Friday night, the Marion Military Institute Tigers had to deal with a wet, sloppy field caused by a rain shower during the first quarter of a 47-0 loss.
“We played good football until it started raining,” MMI coach David Ivey said. “That’s when the wheels fell off.”
The Tigers (0-2) fumbled the ball three times, losing it each time.
Shelby quickly turned a close game into a route, scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter to open a 28-0 halftime lead.
“We matched up well with Shelby,” Ivey said. “They just had a lot of speed.”
Shelby added two more touchdowns, miffing one extra point, but still owned a 41-0 lead headed into the fourth period.
Javoris Smith led the MMI offense with five catches for 64 yards. On defense, Smith had eight tackles.
Running back Wes McElroy rushed 10 times for 38 yards, while Wendel Crews had 13 tackles for the Tigers.
“We gave up a lot of sacks,” Ivey said. “But I think we’ll be all right.”
