Keith blanked by Calera

Keith coach Henry Crum was looking to the future Friday night after his Bears were shut out by host Calera, 47-0.

Despite the lopsided score, Crum was happy with the performance of several young players, including eighth grade running back Jatavius Turner.

Turner’s whose father, Steve Carson, holds the Keith record with 440 yards rushing during a 1985 game, carried eight times for 50 yards.

“I think he’s going to be in the same mold as his father,” Crum said. “He’s really impressed me.”

The Bears were missing two 300-pound offensive linemen, prompting starting quarterback Deonta Millhouse to move to offensive guard.

“He did a great job,” Crum said. “The kid’s got a lot of heart.”

Filling in for Millhouse was backup Ladarrius Jones, who did not complete a pass, but did show on-field leadership, Crum said.

The Bears’ coach said his team would be more likely to succeed if they were given the same tools as many other prep teams.

“We’re at a disadvantage,” he said. “We don’t have any headphones, so we can’t talk to anyone in the booth. If something goes wrong on the field, it’s hard for me to see it.”
