This winter, fans of Black Belt basketball will see a familiar sight on CBS, ABC and ESPN. Former Wilcox Central basketball star Michael Williams will be bringing his high-flying, rim-rocking game to the Big 12 this season for the University of Texas.
Williams, the 6-foot-7 freshman-to-be, spent the summer in Austin with his new team getting ready to introduce himself to the rest of the college basketball world.
“Being down there I got a chance to see a lot of things. I think that was good,” Williams said. “It was fun. We have a great team. We have five freshmen coming in, so right from the start we had to come in and get in the flow so it won’t take too long for us to gel together.”
After three months of summer school and workouts, Williams is back in Alabama this week visiting family and getting ready for the basketball season. However, things went so well in Texas, the McDonald’s and Parade All-American said he didn’t get homesick at all.
“I already had friends down there so everything fell in place,” he said.
As part of one of the country’s most highly touted freshman class, Williams came into the summer ready to earn his spot and playing time.
“I think every freshman that came in tried to mark their spot off early,” he said. “It was pretty fun coming every day and playing against everybody and everybody just coming at each other because that only makes us better.”
Williams, who led the Wildcats to the state title his junior year, was in Selma to pick up his Parade All-American practice.
No matter whether or not Williams gets a big jam in his first few games, he will have a memorable start to his freshman year.
Williams and the Longhorns will open the season in Hawaii playing in the Maui Classic.
“It will be fine,” Williams said of his first trip to the Islands
Hopefully, the Longhorns will be able to say the same thing about Williams career in Austin.
