Dallas County gun owners will feel a little safer after they renew their permits to carry a weapon in the county.

Through Project Childsafe, the city and county will distribute thousands of gunlocks to area residents free of charge.

Project Childsafe will issue 361,000 gunlocks to Alabama, and thousands will go to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and the Selma Police Department.

This is the second time Project Childsafe has issued gunlocks through the city and county law enforcement agencies.

“It went over real well (the last time),” according to Dallas County Chief Deputy Randy Pugh.

“A lot of (gun owners) were pleased.”

Pugh said the sheriff department issues the gunlocks whenever anyone purchases or renews a weapons permit. The Selma City Police Department issue the locks to anyone who requests them.

Project Childsafe is funded by a Department of Justice grant of $50 million. This year, the group plans to provide 20 million gunlocks all around the nation. The National Shooting Sports Foundation distributes the locks nationwide.

Project Childsafe is the largest firearms safety program in the country.

“We are proud to say that since its beginning in 1999, Project Homesafe became the largest, most comprehensive firearms safety education program in the nation,” said Doug Painter, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
