Three separate accidents Friday killed one Selma resident and injured two others, according to reports from Selma Police and the Alabama State Troopers Office at Craig Field.
Selma resident Lee Andrew Alexander was killed early Friday morning when the bicycle he was riding collided with a vehicle on the Cecil B. Jackson Bypass near the Race Street exit.
According to Selma Police Chief Robert Green, the incident occurred around 4 a.m. when Alexander, 41, was attempted to cross the highway on his bicycle.
Dallas County Corner Alan Dailey pronounced him dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jennifer Annas, 20, of Forth Worth, Texas.
Green said Annas and a passenger were traveling through Selma on their way to Fort Benning, Ga.
“There was no foul play by the driver,” Green said. “Our investigation suggests the victim just rolled out in front of them. There was little they could do.”
The passenger of the vehicle notified police and emergency crew about the accident by calling 911.
As part of a routine investigation, blood samples taken from the victim have been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to determine if alcohol may have contributed to the accident.
Alexander was employed as an assistant sexton at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church for many years. His duties included maintaining the church grounds and interior.
One church member described Alexander as a “kind, faithful, and generous man who will be greatly missed.”
A three-car accident injured Archie Blevins, a Selma resident and Jimmy Gibb of Prattville.
Blevins was driving a 1999 Dodge. Gibb was driving a 1993 Chevrolet. A third car, another 1993 Chevrolet, was driven by Warren Mitchell, of Kingsport, Tenn. Mitchell was not injured.
A third accident occurred late Friday afternoon, when a car came over the Edmund Pettus Bridge into Selma and rear-ended another. As of presstime, the drivers of both cars were unidentified. Police on the scene did say that no one was injured.
