Selma’s 15- and 16-year-old boys are coming off a big weekend. With three wins under their belt, the All-Stars are hoping to make the finals tonight with a game against an unknown opponent.
Selma will play the loser of the other semifinal game. If they continue to play like they did this weekend it won’t matter who the All-Stars play against.
Saturday, Selma beat Enterprise, 8-1.
Cody Massey pitched a complete game, giving up only two runs the entire night and striking out five.
Jacob Paxton had a two-out, bases-loaded single that drove in two. Shane Moreland pulled the same play later in the game.
Sunday, Selma continued, with a five-inning, 16-6 win over Foley. Andrew Harrison was the winning pitcher, in relief of Zach Huey.
Moreland stepped up again, and went four-for-four, scoring three. Massey went two-for-two, scoring two. Paxton went two-for-four and picked up two. Blake South went one-for-two, scoring twice and driving in three runners. John Solomon went two-for-three and added three runs to the effort.
Andrew Harrison and Ware Cox both scored twice.
Last night, Selma beat Underwood in a thriller, 5-4.
Underwood came in and picked up two runs in the third, lighting a fire under Selma. Selma responded by picking up four runs in the third.
Solomon began the inning with a single matched by a single from Tyler Hollis. South walked, loading the bases. Paxton came in and walked as well, forcing a run. Moreland stepped up and singled, driving in another run. Then Massey came to bat and singled, driving in two runs.
Underwood responded by picking up two more runs in the fourth to tie the game. Neither team scored again until the seventh, when Paxton and South brought the game home.
South led off with a double in the seventh, getting on base. Paxton responded by stepping up and doubling, sending South home for the winning run.
South was the winning pitcher for the game, giving up no earned runs.
Underwood managed to score on four errors, but Selma managed to pull through defensively on a couple of key plays.
“Solomon made a circus catch in right when Underwood had the bases loaded in the fifth,” Head Coach Robert Massey said. “That may have been the difference in the ball game.”
Josh McAteer picked up another impressive defensive play when he picked off a pop fly in center and doubled off second to end a threat from Underwood.
Selma plays again tonight at 5:30 p.m.
