North boys, girls sweep South stars

MONTGOMERY – Atiya Jackson of Buckhorn High School scored 17
points as the North beat the South, 98-69, in the Alabama High School All-Stars Girls’ Basketball Game, Friday night at Auburn University-Montgomery.
In the boys’ game, Howard Edwards earned Most Valuable Player honors as the North coasted to an 86-66 win.
Selma High’s Santana Seay and Robin Porter of Abbeville played well for the South in the girls’ contest. Seay pushed the ball upcourt and fired a one-handed pass that resulted in a basket that put the South ahead 19-9.
Seay finished with six points, five assists and one rebound.
The North was led by Fairfield’s 6-foot-3 guard Dewanna Bonner, Jackson and Hatton’s Amber Rutherford.
Sparkman’s Monica Maxwell hit two three-pointers and Rutherford sank a pair of jumpers as the North opened a 53-35 halftime lead.
Bonner earned MVP honors in the North win.
The boys’ tilt saw the South All-Stars being led by Selma High star John Dailey and Southside High’s Deonta Williams.
The North jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Crossville’s Dustyn Moore scored 15 points and Michael Adams of Pelham chipped in 11 as the North led 47-31 at the half.
In the second half, the South made a run led by LeFlore’s Harold Edwards, who tossed in 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
Despite the loss, Edwards was named Most Valuable Player.
