The Dallas-Selma Community Action and Community Development Corporation work camp needs volunteers.
The one-week program, which will do repairs to about 20 area homes, needs youths 15 and older, contractors and adult volunteers.
“We’re short.” Community Development Director Aretha Phillips said. “We’re going to do minor repairs to 20 homes of elderly or disabled people.
We already have all the homes all we need is the volunteers.”
The program, which starts July 19, is a partnership between the Dallas-Selma Community Action and Community Development Corporation, Jonathan Daniels Community Development, First Baptist Church on Broad and the City of Selma.
“We just thought we always have these groups coming form out of town to help Selma and we decided to help our own,” Phillips said.
The repair work will mostly be minor.
Houses will be painted, drywall will be installed and floors, doors and windows will be repaired.
Some houses will also receive a handicap ramp.
“The job are not intensive. We’ve had one contractor to volunteer, if we had 10 it would be super,” Phillips said.
The days will last from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
The contractors will simply be expected to supervise the youths while they work.
“We’re buying the paint brushes and all of the materials for the homes,” Phillips said. “All of the clients are really ecstatic. We really need the contractors to supervise the kids.
Licensed contractors, skilled workers and painters to supervise the painting of the houses.”
Volunteers can get more information or sign up be calling Wes Patterson at First Baptist Church or by calling Phillips at 875-9020.
“We just haven’t had the response we were expecting,” Phillips said. “I’ve had several people call to ask about it, but we just can’t pin anyone down.”
