Selma Police arrested Jeffery Cherry Thursday in connection to the second shooting inside Selma City limits in the past three weeks.

According to police officials, at around 2 p.m. Thursday, a group of young men confronted Cherry at his Vine Street residence claiming he had stolen some property from them.

Capt. Anita Barlow said during this confrontation, a fight ensued between the 21-year-old Cherry and 18-year-old Selma resident Tobias Craig.

“At some point during this fight Cherry produced a .22 caliber handgun and fired several times,” said Barlow. “One of the fired rounds struck Craig on the right side of his midsection.”

The bullet entered and exited Craig’s body. He was later rushed to Vaughan Regional Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries and released the same day.

Barlow said Craig’s injuries were not life threatening and he should be OK. Others involved in the fight received only minor injuries and did not require medical attention.

Selma police arrested Cherry for felony assault second degree charges and he was taken to the Dallas County Jail. He was later released on a $5,000 bond.

Barlow said detectives have enlisted the services of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to attempt to trace the origins of the handgun. This information, along with information police gather in how Cherry came into possession of the handgun, may lead to additional charges.

At this time, no other charges have been filed against the other young men who were at the scene.

As the investigation continues, Barlow says, more arrests could be made in connection to this shooting.

After he was arrested, Cherry filed a report against an unnamed individual for second degree assault.

On June 12, police arrested Lorenzo Walker on charges of attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle after he fired several bullets in the parking lot of the Highland Avenue McDonald’s and injured one person.
