Rain changes Dixie Youth picture

This week’s stormy weather throughout the area has done much more than bring relief from the hot, dry conditions that have plagued much of the Southeast. The stormy conditions also have drastically altered the upcoming Dixie Youth Baseball and Softball playoff schedules.

Rain along with standing water on the playing fields at the Sportsplex cause the postponement of all games Friday and Saturday, according to Elton Reece, director of the Selma Parks and Recreation Department. After examining the fields at the Sportsplex early Friday afternoon, Reece decided the conditions were too dangerous for games to be played.

“If we’re rained out on Monday or Tuesday,” Reece said, “we might have to go to a single-elimination format. We don’t really want to do that because it will mean some teams in the losers’ bracket will be finished for the season. But if it keeps raining, that may be something we have to do.”

Reece added that the softball and baseball playoffs could be completed in three days if the rains dissipate.

“We really need to finish by July 1,” he said, “because a lot of families are planning trips out of town for the summer.”

While the revised Dixie Youth Baseball playoff schedules were not available Saturday, the new softball schedule was set. Here is a list of the Dixie Youth Softball playoff games slated for Monday and Tuesday nights at the Sportsplex.
