July 27 is the preliminary hearing date for the suspected gunmen in the Broad Street shootout.
Three Selma youths, Jerron Stallworth, Corey Cooper and Michael Walker face three separate charges of shooting into an occupied building.
On May 26, Cooper, Walker and Stallworth allegedly drove a white Chevrolet Caprice down Broad Street and exchanged gunfire with the drivers of a red and gold Chevrolet Caprice. While no bystanders were injured, rounds hit the office of The Selma Times-Journal and the Pilcher-McBryde Drugstore. The drivers of the other car haven’t been apprehended.
Walker, a 16-year-old Selma resident, was injured in the incident. Witnesses later said that Walker was the actual shooter, according to District Attorney Ed Greene.
Walker was arrested two days after the incident on a charge of shooting into an occupied building.
The young men appeared in court on June 9, for their first call hearing. Attorneys were assigned to the defendants at that point.
Michael Jackson, district attorney elect, was assigned to represent Stallworth. Vaughan Russell was assigned to Cooper. Angela Starr was assigned to Walker.
The case hasn’t been assigned to an assistant district attorney.
Bond was also set for $125,000 each during the preliminary hearing for all three youths. They haven’t made bond and are being held in the Dallas County Jail until the trial.
The preliminary hearing will give the district judge in the case a chance to hear evidence and determine whether the case is worthy of going to trial.
If a Grand Jury convenes and hears the case before the hearing the preliminary hearing may be cancelled.
Greene hopes he’s able to convict all the defendants in the trial.
“It’s very important that they be dealt with in a very serious manner commiserate with the danger they represent to the community,” he said.
