A broken watermain sent up a gusher at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Griffin Avenue and Washington Street.

According to Matthew Leashore, supervisor of the distribution department of Selma Water Works, the break resulted from a rusting line, approximately 80 years old.

all the time,” he said. “In my 24 years with Selma Water Works I’ve seen everything,” he said.

The water crew responded within 30 minutes, he said, and cut off a big valve. That reduced the flow and lowered the pressure in the lines in the neighborhood, but no one was without water, he said.

When contacted at the sight early Saturday morning, Leashore said that a part had been ordered, he expected it to arrive in about an hour and that would take care of the problem.
